About More Than Wins Volleyball Inc
What Is More Than Wins Volleyball Inc?
MTW is a social media coaching content company that offers traning for coaches and players along with offering the best prices and consulting on volleyball equipment through our dealership agreements with Baden, VolleyCart, Oates Specialties, and Spikelite. We are NOT a club - we work WITH clubs and schools to offer camps and clincis throughout the country along with our own events in our home city of San Antonio.
Who Runs More Than Wins Volleyball?
MTW is the passion project of long time High School, Club, and College Coach Scott Mattera. Scott is currently the Head Coach at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio and while working with kids from all clubs, he is a lead training coach at Alamo Volleyball Club. You can read more about him and all of our coaches in the bio section!
What Is the History of More Than Wins Volleyball?
Coach Scott has been coaching in various capacities since college and everywhere he’s gone, he’s developed a following in the camps and clincs market outside of just the school or club teams he was coaching. During COVID, he was looking for ways to stay conencted to the volleyball community and offer some help to kids and coaches who were limited to just indivdiual type training during that tough time. The first @MoreThanWinsVB TikTok went up on April 21st of 2021 - it got a few hundred views and coach was pumped, lol. We are now sitting at over 75,000 followers between TikTok and Instagram with tens of millions of views on over 1000 videos! As we grew, requests for camps, clinics, and speaking engagements started rolling in as well as corporate sponsorships from great volleyball businesses like Sports Imports, Baden, and VolleyCart.
What Are the Philosophies Behind More Than Wins Volleyball?
First and foremost, as is obvious from the name, Coach Scott has always thought of volleyball and coaching as a means to a bigger end. We love volleyball, but it’s not who we are. Almost no one goes pro in volleyball, so why are we sacrificing so much time and treasure on this thing? It has to be about more than “batting a heavy baloon over a net better than 6 people we don’t know”. It has to be about “more than wins” that won’t matter to hardly anyone 5 years from now. Youth sports should be about human development - learning to work for what you want, discipline, teamwork, selflessness, confidence, patience, and yes dealing with heartache and disappointment as well as how to handle success and share it!
Another core philosophy of MTW is that good trianing should be accessable. We see issues with the landscape of youth sports becoming so professionalized and business driven that many familes can’t possibly keep up financailly. We know we are part of that machine - we are not a charity and we don’t begrudge anyone from making a living coaching kids! But we can certianly structure what we do to expand opportunites. Therefore, MTW has committed to never put coaching, teaching, and drill content behind a paywall. All of our vidoes are 100% free on our social media pages so any coach from any community can access hours of free resources to help them help their kids. Kids and parents can of course access it as well free of charge so there are no financial or locational barriers to being able to benefit from our trianing! In addition to free coaching content online, we try to price our events in a reasonable manner. You won’t see us charging crazy amounts for private lessons - in fact it’s VERY rare that we do them at all becasue of what we would have to charge to make them economically feasible. We NEVER pressure families to spend more money on more trianing and we don’t sell families on unrealistic hopes and dreams so that they spend more money than they should.
The last of our core philosophies is that coaching carries a lot of responsibility. What we mean by that is that if families are going to spend their hard earned money and trust their kids with us, we need to be providing a high level of service. We need to bring great energy to every training. We need to think through every drill we do to maximize teaching and touches. We need to be extremely well trained in what we are teaching and have a deep understanding of it. We are not just there to toss balls and spew back how we learned it back in the day or what I saw someone else do. Finally, if we really beleive that this is about “more than wins” we need to make it a fun experience that teaches more than just volleyball…
