MTW’s most common training offering is small group position clinics locally in San Antonio. These clinics are by invite only and are not just open to anyone to sign up like our “open” camps and clinics are. I know some will label us as elitist for this philosophy but please let me explain a bit deeper…

Running clinics is hard! It is hard because no two players need eactly the same thing and/or are at exactly the same level. That being said, most players need SIMILAR things to other players IF they are of similar abilty level and position thus allowing us to do group skills sessions that are reasonable cost. One of the biggest challenges is finding the right offering of skills and level of play that attract players with similar needs. Mixing more experienced players with less experienced players in a small group setting doesn’t maximize the experience for either. Becasue of this, we are very selective of who can come to each type of clinic and unfortunately, we can’t be all things to all people.

We do not openly post MTW hosted position clinics in San Antonio. We send out invites to our participation list. Everyone on the invite list has been vetted by Coach Mattera and has a level or “belt” assigned. This allows us to target our invites to assure that players of similar levels are training together. I know this causes some consternation and I truly wish I had the time to train everyone at their own level, but there are lots of good coaches in San Antonio who are much better with beginners and younger players than we are or just have better availability then we do.

If you would like to be considered for these clinics, please send me an email at coachmattera@gmail.com with a little blurb about who your daughter is and what her expereince level is. Please come with thick skin, because we may tell you she’s not ready for these sessions. It’s not an exact science and we do make mistakes in evaluation, but we have found that most reasonable parents actaully want the truth and transparency. In addition to that, we have lots of “open” clinics and camps through MTW, through OLLU, and via outside groups that hire us where players who aren’t quite ready for the invite clinics can participate to build their skills or show us they are ready to make the invite clinic list!
